The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Prof. Engr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has announced that the institution will sponsor Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programmes for its best graduating students across all schools, beginning with the 2024/2025 academic session.
The decision was disclosed during an enlarged Management and Academic Board meeting on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the institution’s Council Chamber.
Recall that the Governor approved and disbursed a ₦150 million grant in 2024, with ₦1 million awarded to each of 150 beneficiaries drawn from three sets of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates spanning the 2021/2022 to 2023/2024 academic sessions.
In a related development, the ₦100 million grant approved for 100 exceptional graduates of the 2025 set is currently underway.
The fund is intended to serve as seed capital for viable, bankable, and scalable business ventures.
According to the Rector, the initiative is designed to promote academic excellence and retain high-performing students within the institution.
He added that while the polytechnic will fund the PGD programmes, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is expected to support beneficiaries at the Master’s degree level.
“We need to encourage our best students to stay and grow within the system. This will become an institutional policy to motivate undergraduates to strive for excellence, except where individuals choose otherwise,” he said.
Prof. Okoro also highlighted ongoing developments at the Osisioma Campus, commending the state government for the construction of a 1.9-kilometre dual carriage internal road network, with seven-metre-wide lanes, alongside water reticulation projects.
He assured prospective students of a conducive learning environment in the coming years, noting that work at the site is progressing steadily.
The Rector further disclosed that following the restructuring of the School of Science and Industrial Technology (SSIT) into the School of Industrial Sciences and the School of Natural Sciences, the affected units have been directed to relocate to the Osisioma Campus after the first semester examinations in May.
In addition, the institution has been selected to benefit from digital enterprise support, including the provision of 200 computer systems and the establishment of a Computer-Based Training (CBT) centre, which will also be sited at the Osisioma Campus.
