The death toll from the recent tanker explosion in Niger State has tragically increased to 57, with 52 victims currently fighting for their lives in hospitals. The devastating incident occurred on October 21, 2025, when a petrol tanker overturned in the Essa community of Katcha Local Government Area, spilling fuel that desperate residents tried to scoop up, which led to a catastrophic explosion.
Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed this grim update, noting that the deceased were among those with severe burns who ultimately succumbed to their injuries. “The death toll has now reached 57, while 52 victims are receiving treatment in various hospitals,” he stated to DAILY POST.
Initially, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency’s Minna Operations Office reported 46 fatalities—comprising 12 males, 27 females, and 6 children—and 63 injuries, including 24 males, 32 females, and 7 children; all linked to the hazardous act of scooping fuel. The injured individuals have been treated at local hospitals, with 14 critical cases referred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital.
