Nigeria Condemns Ghanaian Protests Calling for Deportation of Nigerians

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned protests by some Ghanaians demanding the deportation of Nigerians from Ghana over allegations of criminal activities. The protests, which gained attention through a viral video on Monday, July 28, 2025, showed hundreds of demonstrators in Ghana carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution,” “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals,” and “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos.”
Reacting to the protests, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the blanket labeling of Nigerians as criminals as “outrageous” and “unacceptable.” In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Abuja, she said, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves, while those bad ones should be fished out and face the necessary sanctions. Ghana and Nigeria are like Siamese twins. They are brothers, and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration, they should continue to live in peace like brothers.”
The federal government urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid any form of violence, assuring them that the matter is being addressed diplomatically. Dabiri-Erewa also advised Nigerians to disregard videos circulating online that depict the destruction of their shops and properties by Ghanaians, warning against the use of inciteful language that could escalate tensions.
The Nigerian government commended the efforts of the Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissioners in working to de-escalate the situation. Authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana, rooted in their shared history and membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The federal government called for continued dialogue to resolve the issue and urged Ghanaian authorities to address specific criminal activities through legal channels rather than targeting an entire nationality. Further diplomatic efforts are underway, with updates expected as both nations work to restore calm and mutual respect.
