NSCDC Urges Abia Residents in Flood-Prone Areas to Relocate Amid Imminent Flood Risk

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued an urgent advisory for residents in flood-prone areas of Abia State to relocate to safer locations due to predictions of significant flooding starting this month. The warning was contained in a press statement released on Friday by NSCDC Abia State Commandant Akinsola Aderemi, signed by Public Relations Officer Doreen Udugwu, from the state command headquarters.
Citing reports from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), Commandant Aderemi highlighted the imminent flood risk outlined in their Annual Flood Outlook (AFO). The forecast identifies nine local government areas (LGAs) in Abia State as high-risk zones: Aba North, Aba South, Isiala Ngwa North, Isuikwuato, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Arochukwu.
In response, the NSCDC has mobilized its Disaster Management Unit to collaborate with area commanders and divisional officers to conduct sensitization campaigns across Abia’s 17 LGAs. These campaigns aim to educate communities on flood risks and preparedness measures to mitigate potential losses.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Abia residents,” Aderemi stated. “I assure the public of our dedication to duty and the unrelenting effort of my officers to protect lives and properties during this period.”
The NSCDC’s proactive measures align with its core mandate to respond to natural disasters, urging residents in vulnerable areas to take immediate precautions and relocate to avoid the anticipated flooding.
