In a bold move poised to redefine public transportation in Abia State, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, expressed excitement about the on-site visit of Yutong Bus Co., Ltd., the world-renowned bus manufacturer, to the state. The visit marked a significant step in Governor Otti’s vision to modernise and streamline transportation infrastructure for the benefit of all residents.
The tour of inspection was expertly coordinated by Dr Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, Honourable Commissioner for Transport, who guided the Yutong delegation through the state’s fleet of newly acquired buses. During the tour, the Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area also expressed his gratitude to the Governor Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, and the Honourable Commissioner for transportation for the initiative as the delegates received detailed explanations from Dr Ukaegbu on the state’s long-term vision for electric buses and Abia’s ambition to become a model for modern public transportation.
The delegation was led by Ambassador Dr Osita Offor, “De Ultimate Commander” (Ikenga Gburugburu), who played a pivotal role in facilitating this landmark initiative. His involvement helped integrate international expertise with local efforts, ensuring that Abia State benefits from cutting-edge transportation technology. He also used the opportunity to call on investors to make their way to Abia State to see things for themselves and understand the need to invest in the state and be part of Governor Otti’s giant strides in industrialisation.
Yutong delegates expressed strong admiration for the state’s infrastructural development. Damian Li, Account Manager (Nigeria), remarked on the efficiency and organisation observed at the bus terminals. Frank Lee, MD of West Africa, Yutong, praised the readiness of Abia State to host world-class transportation solutions. The delegation highlighted that the KYC process and state-level administrative support impressed them, motivating Yutong to proceed with the production and supply of electric buses in collaboration with Everyday Motors Ltd, the local partner.
Tony Godson Anyanwu, Project Promoter, Yutong & Everyday Motors alongside Yutong representatives, expressed amazement at the level of development in the state-of-the-art bus terminal in Umuahia, road infrastructure, and the enabling policy environment, affirming that Abia is poised to lead transportation development across the continent. Discussions explored strategies to expand Abia’s transportation network beyond state borders, envisioning the Abia Line as a brand that stretches across the West and Central African coasts.
Governor Otti who spoke through Dr Ukaegbu, the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, emphasised the significance of the visit, noting that the introduction of modern electric buses will improve daily commutes and stimulate economic growth by facilitating the movement of people and goods. “Our vision is clear,” Governor Otti stated. “Abia State will lead the way in sustainable, reliable, and comfortable public transport in Nigeria, setting a benchmark for others to follow.”
The partnership with Yutong is expected to strengthen the new era of public transportation in Abia, creating jobs, enhancing urban mobility, and reducing environmental impacts from conventional transport. Residents can anticipate safer, faster, affordable, and more comfortable travel experiences, reflecting the administration’s broader commitment to innovation and development.
